Jim Mier of VenTERRA Environmental Inc.
In 1994, Southern California was shaken by the Northridge earthquake. Buildings cracked, ceilings collapsed, and homes that once felt safe suddenly weren’t. Amid the chaos, there was an urgent need for asbestos and lead remediation — and that’s where Jim Mier stepped in. He didn’t start with funding or a business plan. He started with determination, a small team, and a belief that helping people mattered.
Those early days were raw, hands-on, and sometimes improvised. Jim even sent his nephews into damaged neighborhoods with flyers and business cards — something we laugh about now and wouldn’t necessarily repeat. But that hustle wasn’t just about finding work — it was about showing up for people when they needed help most.
As the years went on, Jim continued working throughout residential, commercial, public, federal, and industrial sectors. Project by project, client by client, he built relationships grounded in trust, not transactions. He ran other companies, learned what worked, and saw what didn’t. And even though he gained experience and respect in the industry, there was still something missing — something that wasn’t fully his.
That changed in 2014.
With the support of a couple of highly respected demolition and recycling partners — and decades of knowledge behind him — Jim finally took the leap and created VenTERRA Environmental Inc.
VenTERRA wasn’t founded just to be another remediation company. It was built to be different — rooted in values that too often get overlooked:
Do the job right.
Be honest, even when it’s difficult.
Treat every property like someone’s home — because it is.
And care — really care — about the outcome.
Today, VenTERRA has grown far beyond those first earthquake-response projects. We’ve handled everything from small homes to complex industrial sites — but our philosophy hasn’t changed.
To us, this work isn’t just technical. It’s personal.
Every job represents someone’s safety, someone’s investment, someone’s peace of mind.
And after more than 31 years in the field, Jim still believes one thing above all:
Where there’s asbestos, there should also be integrity.
That’s the foundation VenTERRA was built on — and it’s the standard we live by every single day.
